Alternative fuel is one thing that we should be focusing on if we’re going to be responsible stewards of the environment. Between pollution and diminishing supplies, petroleum and other conventional energy sources are becoming nonviable. If we’re going to leave this world in better shape than we found it, it’s time to start looking at alternative fuels. Here are a few of the options.
Conventional fuel sources are getting a lot harder to extract, and using them heavily over the past century means that there’s not as much oil as there once was. Now, people are getting a lot more worried about available fuel options. There’s concern that we’ll soon run out of petroleum, and a crisis will begin.
Fortunately, there are a number of other options that could be a viable solution. Science may be able to offer us a great commercial solution that will be readily available, friendly to the environment, and not too expensive.
For instance, bio-diesel, an alternative fuel extracted from plant material, can be used in a conventional diesel engine. A related fuel is E-85. Made from eighty-five percent ethanol and fifteen percent gasoline, it can significantly cut our reliance on traditional fuels.
However, neither of these fuels is a magic bullet. They still cause pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and require a lot of plant matter. The most popular choices are corn and soybeans, meaning that as production increases, these plants will become less available as food for humans. This has already caused problems in poorer locations.
One alternative fuel source that’s viable for transportation is electricity. It’s the best currently available technology when it comes to conserving our existing sources of fuel. The efficiency of these cars is greater even when it comes to using conventional means of generating electricity. That’s because all power can be generated in a central location, instead of in the car itself. Alternate energy sources like wind, water, and sun may be used supplementally or instead of coal and oil to generate electricity, depending on the location.
The ultimate alternate fuel source, of course is your own legs on bike peddles. Peddle power is becoming increasingly popular as none of the other alternate fuel sources has completely panned out. Bio-diesel is not widely available and the power that the electric cars allow has not been perfected as yet. The bike is really a flawless machine for short to medium commutes. You will be in better shape, save some money, and do the environment a favor as well. This article has presented the currently available alternative fuel sources and now it’s YOUR turn to decide.
