Given a choice I suspect that all of us would like to get married and live happily ever after. Unfortunately this isn’t always possible and marriages break down and end in divorce. Unfortunately for you if you are going through a divorce it is quite likely that the woman you shared your life and dreams with is now trying to get every cent she can out of you. Here are some tips that may help you avoid a bad Divorce settlement.
1. This may come as a shock but lawyers want to make as much money out of your divorce as possible, this is their business. If they can make the divorce stretch out over a long time they will because they will earn more money. Find a lawyer that has been recommended to you. But remember the lawyer who got cousin Bobby off of that DUI charge may not be the one who should be handling your divorce. Find a divorce specialist with a good reputation.
2. Make sure you find a good location to store all your personal and financial records. You should be the only one with access. Get yourself a new post box where you can have private mail sent to.
3. Cancel your credit cards and close all joint accounts you have with your wife.
4. This may sound like a strange one and it may be the last thing you want to do but keep some lines of communication open with your wife. It may that one day she contacts you and says “hey let’s get this over with quickly and get on with our lives… what do you want to settle quickly” Additionally small problems can quickly escalate to major problems if everything has to go through a lawyer.
5. If you have kids it’s important that you speak to them as often as possible. Reassure them that the divorce has nothing to do with them. Do everything to stop them feeling like they have been abandoned.
6. Do not destroy any old correspondence in a fit of rage or when you become emotional. The written word counts, the spoken word doesn’t in a court of law.
7. Do not pass nasty comments about your wife either to your friends or on her face. Your friends might snitch on you, or the word will get around and then the differences will be more irreconcilable. Why create bad blood, when there isn’t need for any?
8. Chill! Don’t let your wife provoke you into being aggressive. If you’re seen to be aggressive you will lose your divorce. If your wife is aggressive towards you just stay calm.
9. Use friends and family for emotional support, you are not the first person to go through a divorce. This is when you find out who your real friends are.
Divorces are not nice and they can get very nasty. Your wife will unfortunately be in the driving seat when it comes to a settlement. But with the right help and advice you can get what you want from the divorce not what she wants you to have. There are several really good guides available on the internet that will help ensure that you gee the settlement you want. Hunt them down!
