Kourion/Kolossi Castle - Ancient Kourion and the castle at Kolossi are both in the Limassol area and can be visited together in a day. They are just two examples of the wealth of history to be found in Cyprus - the Kourion sites dating from the second century AD and Kolossi from the thirteenth century.

The ruins at Kourion are to be found in breathtaking scenery overlooking the sea - this is probably the most spectacular archaeological site in Cyprus. There are actually two sites, the old city of Kolossi and the sanctuary of Apollo Hylates - they are a few kilometers apart. There is also a museum in the nearby village of Episkopi. As it is one of Cyprus’ most popular tourist attractions, it’s worth arriving early in high season.

Kolossi castle was the headquarters of the Knights Hospitallers - the name later given to the Commanderia dessert wine. Despite changing owners a number of times, the castle is inextricably linked with both the Hospitallers and wine making. Both Kourion and Kolossi are signposted from the Limassol-Paphos highway. Kourion is close to Episkopi village, Kolossi to the village of the same name.

Larnaca Salt Lake and Hala Sultan Tekke - For anybody arriving at the Larnaca airport, one of North Cyprus’ outstanding places to see and is right next to the airport installations! As you turn left out of the airport you will find the road running along a causeway. On each side you will either see two lakes, or two salt flats, depending on season - Discover the Larnaca Salt Lake and site of the mosque or Tekke of Hala Sultan.

Salt has been extracted from the lake since ancient times and this continues, on a small scale, to this day. If you are visiting Cyprus in lat winter or early spring, look out for the visiting flamingos and other migratory birds. Another salt lake can be found further along the coast of Akrotiri. Peer across the lake and you will see the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque surrounded by palm trees. This is a wonderful place to visit. A Visit To Labadee In Haiti

The starting port for our Royal Caribbean cruise of the western Caribbean was Labadee, Hispaniola which is really a part of Haiti. This specific port is rented out to Royal Caribbean therefore entirely their cruiseships get here. Labadee is actually a peninsula with a a few beaches. Getting to land from the cruiseship is by tender.

There is a fine department for children with floating fake iceberg lettuces to mounting and water slides but they charge an admission fee. Floatation mattresses are also accessible for hire for those who just want to swim in the sea. There are also locals who help with taking beach chairs for you but they require hints. So affairs here are a money grabber. The cruiseship did have optional turns for snorkelling, parasailing, waverunner and kayaking tours but we thought that they were high-priced. Most passengers just spent the day loosing around the beaches.

The area just about Labadee was enjoyable decent but the beaches and lands themselves were fairly rocky so wearing sandals in the water would be advised. Royal Caribbean had directed a beach BBQ at an outdoor picnic facility which was fine but nothing special. There is a market there lying in of two constructions. One is a store where the souveniers and items have marked prices and the other building is like your regular market where locals try to hustle you for business. The locals interior the market were rough but polite. If you don’t mind haggle, you could get some pretty good deals but if you disapproval this type of aspiring aura, then you best head off the market except for the fixed price store.

One big conflict between this port compared to others is that since it is terrible well being used as a close beach, you will not be hassled by locals. The sellers coming around with drinks at the beach locations are really Royal Caribbean staff so if one wishes to buy a drink, the cruiseship passcard is all that is essential. As for cares about being in Haiti given the poverty and political situation, Labadee was not a trouble because the entire site is involved by a high steel fence. Other riders later told us that they wound off near the perimeter of the site and saw many Haitians along the fence begging for handouts and food. The fencing was mostly dark in the space from the main tourist areas.

We found Labadee in general to be a bit of a waste of time for us. The beaches were too rocky and we didn’t have access to inexpensive activities since everything was run by Royal Caribbean. If one wanted to just go lie on the beach all day and not much else, then Labadee would be a suitable place. For those who want to experience some culture, do water sports without going through the cruiseship, or shop duty free.

The begin your day headed for the Grand Canyon where you will drive north of Flagstaff on Hwy 89 toward Hwy 64. Inside you will see sketches, photos and other memorabilia of Powell’s journey on the river from 1869 and 1871. There are also Native American and pioneer artifacts to bring history to life for you.

After your visit to the museum you may be in the mood for a boat trip on the great Lake Powell. You can find everything you need at Page which over looks the dramatic vistas of Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam. It is also adjacent to the fabulous Navajo Nation which will take another day to truly see and enjoy.

While you are on the water visit Rainbow Bridge National Monument which is the largest sacred natural bridge in the world. This bridge spans 275 feet across the river and stands 290 ft high! You can get there on the cruise and dock so you can actually walk on the bridge.

The Canyhon de Chelly National Monument offers you rugged cliffs to see and stunning views. There are jeep tours that you can take and explore the Anasazi ruins. The Anaszi Indians are the ancestors of the modern Pueblo Indians. They were in the area as early at AD 1 and AD 1300! There are artifacts of their baskets, pottery, cloth ornaments and tools remaining for you to see.

Take a jeep tour of Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Here you will be surrounded by sheer cliffs and hundreds of Anasazi ruins. There are also modern Navajo homes and farms in the area. The Anasazi Indians are the ancestors of the modern Pueblo Indians who settled and farmed in the Four Corners region between about AD 1 and AD 1300. They made fine baskets, pottery, cloth ornaments and tools. They left behind a wide array of artifacts for you to study while you are in the canyon. This will be a fabulous stop on your trip.

Acid Reflux: What Obesity has to do with it.

Eight studies from the researchers from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, US, indicated that the symptoms of Acid Reflux Disease are increased by having a high BMI or body mass index. Acid Reflux symptoms can increase by as much as 50 percent in overweight people compared to people with normal weight. Obesity is not good news at all.

In 2006, a Dr. B Jacobson, from Boston University School of Medicine, USA, showed that any excess weight might have a negative effect on digestive health. A person of normal weight who gained just a bit of weight , still looked fine , and was not obese could still become more prone to Acid Reflux Disease. Conversely, if a person suddenly noticed his/her Acid Reflux symptoms become more severe, losing a few pounds could help alleviate the symptoms

So why does obesity matter?

Imagine layers and layers of excess body fat compressing the stomach, pushing it in, localizing and trapping stomach acids in little natural enclosures in the stomach folds so formed. And we are still not considering the hormonal modifications going on in the body that cause your obesity, and possibly, some problems in most of your body functions, like digestion.

Another concern for people suffering from Acid Reflux is that research shows that even when undergoing a surgery for weight loss, Acid Reflux can still worsen. Opinions conflict over whether to treat an overweight person through surgery.

Obesity, indirectly leads to slowing of movement and less exercise, and basically loss of various muscle tones. The Esophageal Sphincter could possibly be among those affected.

Ductal (DCIS)and lobular(LCIS) carcinoma in situ are the two sub-categories of this disease.

DCIS is a disease where abnormal cells begin growing in the hollow areas of the mammary ducts. These abnormal cells carry a strong resemblance to those of invasive cancer - DCIS can actually become invasive cancer if left untreated. It is because of this reason that it is very important to frequently perform self examinations.

LCIS is a disease where abnormal cell growth takes place in the hollow areas of the lobules. LCIS differs from DCIS in the fact that LCIS cells do not have the potential to become invasive cancer. However, women that have LCIS are at a much higher risk of getting invasive cancer.

Invasive cancer is when these abnormal cells/tumor spread into surrounding breast tissues and organs. However, invasive cancer could still only be confined to the breast area. If invasive cancer is detected in its early stage, it can be treated with successful outcomes. But in more advanced stages, where the tumor has grown to affect other organs such as the liver, lungs, and bones treatment have lower success rates.

If a woman finds a lump, it is extremely important to get it checked out, the odds of it being invasive cancer is about 20%. She can do this by either getting a mammogram or a biopsy. The mammogram will provide additional information about the size and severity of the tumor. And if necessary, a biopsy will be taken, which can give a physician definitive answers on what type of cancer and its severity.

Giving to charity is a good feeling, and most people give freely without expecting anything in return. Even the most generous contributors will agree, however, that a break at tax time turns that good feeling into a great one.

When you donate to your favorite charity, make sure to let the tax agency know. Charitable tax deductions are readily and legitimately available to you. Your contributions to charitable organizations can add up to a sizeable deduction when you itemize them on IRS Form 1040, Schedule A.

Donating to charity is easy to do, but it does carry certain risks. The tax agencies will only grant tax deductions for contributions made to recognized organizations. Check to see if the organization is recognized by the tax agency before you make your donation. Look for the IRS Publication 78 for a full list of recognized charitable organizations. You can find this list at your local library, and it’s also available online. Take the time to research, and be sure that your money is truly going to a worthy cause.

Not all charitable donations are tax deductible. For example, donations made to political organizations, political leaders or individuals will not realize a tax break. And, even though time is money, you cannot claim a deduction for the time that you spend holding raffles or raising money at bingo or casino games.

You don’t necessarily have to give cash to get a tax break. Deductions may be available for contributions of merchandise, goods or services. One important point to remember is that if the value of the vehicle exceeds $500 and the charity in turn sells the vehicle, the amount of your tax credit will be limited to the gross proceeds of the sale.

If you are donating a household or personal item, a deduction can be claimed on the amount that the item would have fetched at a garage sale or at a flea shop. To qualify for a tax deduction, a proper receipt is required for all charitable contributions over $250.

Only contributions made during the tax year will qualify for a deduction. If you have used a credit card or issued a check, it does not matter what date the transaction shows on your account. You can claim the deduction only in the tax year that you made the donation.

It’s true that it’s better to give than to receive, but it doesn’t hurt to get a little back. Keep a list of your charitable donations, and claim them at the end of the tax year. Consider it your just reward.
