There is fishing around your local spots and then there is heading out to fly fish at one of the epic locations around the world. All you need is a week or so and you too can fly off to a paradise of trout, salmon and so on. It just takes a dream, some time and a few bucks.
As you well know, there are thousands upon thousands of great spots to hit. Heck, I’ve fished in Siberia of all places. Caught mostly vodka, but that is another story. Regardless, picking 5 is difficult, so don’t send me blazing emails about how wrong I am!
1. Alaska. There is little doubt it is one of the last great wildlife spots in the world. Well south of Anchorage, the Bristol Bay area offers a bevy of fish ranging from salmon to trout, pike and more. Hit the various waterways dumping into the bay during the summer.
2. The Bahamas offer a bevy of fishing. When it comes to fly fishing, the flats off of North Andros Island are the best. The fish in the spotlight here is the bonefish. Fishing is good year around, but each shore of the island has a season so ask around.
3. New Zealand is one of the more beautiful countries in the world and the South Island is known to have some excellent fly fishing. Browns and rainbows are on the menu. It is a very informal place, so ask around or buy a local guide to find the best spots.
4. Argentina has much more to offer than epic steaks. Sea run brown trouts upwards of 20 pounds are found on the Rio Grande. The season runs from Christmas to March. Hmmmmaybe it’s time to take a different kind of winter vacation!
5. Western Colorado has a lot to offer and Gunnison River is it for fly fishing. Gunnison Gorge is the spot with towering rock cliffs and rainbows and trout. You’ll need a guide to get there as you have to access it by trail or boat. It is worth it.
Well, there you have it. One man’s opinion on the top spots for anglers to dream about. Getting to these locations actually isn’t that expensive, so start saving now for the trip of your life.
