Live Better, Live Greener

by Simon M Skinner

You hear a lot these days about how important it is to live a greener life? that you should lighten your carbon footprint on the earth. Sometimes it seems like we’re getting lectured everywhere we turn.

But there are several ways you can live a greener life that are easy to implement. Most cities have garbage services that pick up recyclable materials in addition to your trash. It is simple to set up a separate container for cardboard, plastics and other recyclables. On trash day, your garbage service takes it away and does all the hard work of recycling all those materials.

There are many things you can do to cut down on driving. Try to do everything in one trip if possible. You will save money, cut down on traffic, and reduce emissions into the environment. Driving is stressful and stress is not good for you so less driving means less stress. Ride with someone or use public transportation if you can. You can ride a bike or walk in some cases and it will also give you some healthy exercise.

There are also plenty of green products which you can use around the house. These are inexpensive and can end up saving you a lot of money ? for instance, compact fluorescent bulbs. These are a great improvement over regular incandescent light bulbs and cost about the same while using far less energy and lasting a lot longer.

You can use solar lights in your yard ? these lights work just as well as electric lights, but cost nothing to operate and conserve the use of electricity. There are many appealing designs available and they can fit into anyone’s budget. You don’t need to have an electrician install them and the lights are quite bright enough to illuminate your yard. You can even get solar holiday lights, adding a cheerful seasonal touch without adding a thing to your electric bill.

Batteries are another way that you can save money and go green at the same time. Modern rechargeable batteries are long lasting, easy to charge and save you a lot of money. When they do finally run out of charges for good, they are recyclable at your local hardware store, just like broken fluorescent bulbs.

Contrary to popular opinion, it is easy to be green and even easier too go green. It saves you money while doing something good for the environment. Before you know it, living green will be second nature and you’ll be looking for ways to add some more green living to your lifestyle.

Conserving Our Environment

by Stewart M. Russell

‘The Environment’ is a blanket term that includes two primary areas. The environment includes everything around us that is living or non-living. The first of the two areas of the environment is nature as it exists without human interference - animals, plants, microorganisms, even the atmosphere and soil.

The second area that forms a part of the environment is all that does not come from humans. These include forces of nature and forms of energy - elements like air and water, energy like radiation, magnetism and electric force and the climate.

The natural environment as we know it contrasts heavily with the built environment, which is everything that’s completely influenced by our own activity. If you take one geographical region, it can only be considered as a natural environment, if the human impact on it is at its minimum.

Typical examples for existing natural environments are national forests and restricted large nature reserves. While the exact conditions required to be termed as a natural environment can vary from place to place, the term wilderness simply belongs to regions completely without human interference.

There are so few regions that can be considered to be natural environments now. Climate changes can account for some of this - climate changes caused by human influence. We have unseasonal rains and floods, melting icecaps and glaciers, and rising temperatures. Natural environmentalist groups play a major role in trying to keep natural environments intact. They try to push through laws and policies that will preserve the environment - keeping what there is safe, and trying to restore what was lost, as well as trying to create altogether new wilderness areas.

The common environmental preservation goals include several short-term and long-term aspirations. These include reducing pollution and cleaning up to achieve a zero pollution level, using non-recyclable materials to create energy, minimising non-renewable fuel consumption in society, developing alternative energy sources, conserving precious resources such as air, water and land, protecting pure ecosystems, preserving endangered species and maintaining the biodiversity that all life forms on Earth depend on.

The challenges faced by our natural environment include mega development projects, emitting tons of waste into the air and water around it. Industrial plants are also contributing to this. The most recent attention to global warming shows an increasing concern over toxic emissions, which must be reduced at a drastic pace.

Since the human race is responsible for much of what is threatening the environment, it is up to the human race to fix it, as well. The time to start is now and the best place to begin is home.

Preserving Our Environment

The environment includes everything, living component and non-living components. The environment, in itself, can be looked at as being composed of two areas - the first includes everything that humans do not have a part in. This includes animals and plants, the atmosphere and the soil, even microorganisms.

The second key environmental component constitutes anything and everything not specifically human-originated, but also lack clear boundaries while belonging to universal natural resources and physical phenomena. Among these are water, air, climate, energy, magnetism, electric charge and radiation.

If you take a look around you, you will see that nature and man’s creations are at odds everywhere. What we have built constitutes the built environment. Any geographic region can be considered to be a natural environment only if the effect of human beings on it is as little as possible.

Wilderness, does not automatically mean a natural environment. Any area where there is no human interference at all is a wilderness. There are other conditions that need to be met if a region is to be considered a natural environment. National forests and nature reserves are considered to be part of the latter.

There are plenty of things to be done to preserve the earth - pollution is a major concern that needs to be tackled. The depletion of non-renewable sources of energy is another concern. Many species have been wiped out and many others are on the brink of extinction. Land, air and water are not inexhaustible resources. The environmentalists try to preserve and protect the earth and its ecosystem in many ways, trying to tackle these problems.

The challenges faced by our natural environment include mega development projects, emitting tons of waste into the air and water around it. Industrial plants are also contributing to this. The most recent attention to global warming shows an increasing concern over toxic emissions, which must be reduced at a drastic pace.

Taking up the challenge to protect and preserve our environment is everyone’s responsibility. It cannot be simply put off till tomorrow. Global environmental preservation starts right inside your own home.

A Spark Of Ingenuity - Powering The Future On Batteries

by Joyce M. Stuart

The idea of electric cars has not been developed recently, and in fact successful electric vehicles were being developed and manufactured back in the 1830s, with projects in the Netherlands, and in Scotland, achieving great success, with vehicles reaching speeds of up to 65 miles per hour. Mostly popular with ladies, the typical town vehicle was clean, quiet, needed no cranking to get started, and cruised at a comfortable 20 miles an hour. The gas powered cars were being outsold quite dramatically.

Perceptions of electric vehicles today tend to lurch from rickety old golf carts to the slightly absurd milk flats, but the truth is that electric cars today can easily out perform their gas powered counterparts. Not only can they outperform them, but they can do so at a fraction of the cost to both the consumer, and more importantly, the environment. For example, the new Tesla Roadster can leave the Ferrari Spider standing at the lights whilst gliding effortlessly past the Mercedes SL550, whilst costing about a cent per mile in the process. With a top speed of about 130 miles per hour and with a three hour charge sustaining a full 250 mile trip, this is anything but a milk float.

It isn’t just the fact that these electric vehicles produce lower gas emissions, they also produce far less noise pollution too - an often forgotten element of our gas powered vehicles. Some people who have lid comfortably into the driving seat of a sport electric car are shocked by the lack of noise, vibration and raw growl - and it has jokingly been suggested that speakers be installed in some of these models to simulate the growl of a familiar engine. On the flip side of the coin, some people have expressed concern that with almost silent cars nipping around town, there may be an increase in the number of children and elderly people injured on the roads, since the familiar clues of oncoming traffic will no longer be available.

Besides the greener conscience that road users will have through purchasing an electric vehicle, there are many other benefits and incentives on offer which help to make the whole idea of ditching a gas powered car a much easier decision. For example, if you were to purchase the popular little G-Wiz at under 5,000, you will receive a number of benefits in the UK alone. There are now over two hundred fuelling stations across the UK - so maintaining it is much easier than before, and if you drive round London you’ll benefit from free parking, itself worth 5,00 a year! There’s also no road tax to pay, and the car sits happily in the lowest insurance category, so is a far cheaper option all round.

On a larger scale, Israel has launched a scheme called Project Better Place and it is the intention of this scheme to make Israel completely oil free within just ten years. With half a million re-charging points across the country, and with top distances for vehicles between charges reaching two hundred kilometres - easily enough to travel from any point of Israel to any other within the country, this is a practical reality. The model being put forward is not unlike that for mobile phones, with the suggestion that the vehicles are given away free, and that instead of paying for fuel and tax in the normal way, drivers can choose various plans, such as pay-as-you-go options for recharging costs, to buying credit for unlimited mileage for a certain period of time, and so on.

With electric cars being such a strikingly different choice, one of the biggest problems in the past has been consumer demand. Without the demand, there can be no real investment in supply, and the whole project stagnates. However, with examples of electric cars such as Tom Cruise’s Lexus in Minority report, people are increasingly aware that moving to an electric vehicle is not to sacrifice either style or performance. In the US alone there are now almost eight million plug-in electric vehicles - most of which are recreational, and the demand from consumers is increasingly catching the attention of politicians.

An issue that those sceptics raise concerning electric vehicles is that although eh car itself might not be giving off fumes and harming the environment by burning up fossil fuels, the energy for the batteries has to come from somewhere, and this is likely to be through the main electricity grid, itself powered through the burning of fossil fuels, so that ultimately the whole scheme simply shifts the focus away from the end consumer and back to the big industries. In fact this argument is not entirely valid, since more and more power companies are turning to renewable sources of energy, and this is likely to continue. The other argument is that of the fuel consumption ratio. Gas powered cars burn the fossil fuel in a very wasteful way, whereas electric cars use energy in a much more efficient manner. In this way, the actual amount of energy used, and therefore the amount of fossil fuel burned, is far less.

Imagine a future where we can all drive around in almost virtual silence, with no fumes, no smoke, and even if we get stuck in traffic jams or sit stationery at lights, we don’t have to worry about burning fuel unnecessarily. Some people have expressed concern that in this seemingly idyllic future the power companies would fail because at night, when we all plugged in our cars to recharge, we’d overload the grid. In fact, at night this is when the grid is used far less, and estimates have been made that if we all switched to electric cars, the power grid would be able to work at almost half the capacity it does now. Perhaps we can envisage a future where we come home, plug our car into the fuel cells charged through the day by the solar panels on our roof, and sleep with a clean, and green, conscience.

A Guide To Effectively Combat Global Warming

by Bruce Campbell

Global warming is a concept which most people have heard about, whether through their activities online, their daily television viewing, or their radio listening. It is an issue that is definitely receiving an increase of media attention. Though there are opposing viewpoints, people who are concerned about the problem are well within their rights to be. After all, if the predictions are right, the earth may not be a safe place for your future family members.

Fighting against global warming does not have to take a lot of effort or money out of your pocket. In recent years, too much of the main focus of the efforts has been on energy efficient vehicles and appliances. Not having the financial means to make these investments is fine, there are cheaper and simpler ways to join the efforts to help our planet.

Small steps around the home can help fight against global warming. If you are not using an electrical appliance, such as your computer, shut it off. It is also likely that you will be saving money through this method.

Reducing electrical usage by turning off all the lights and appliances is simple. This is not only a free way to help out, but you can also save money at the same time! Also try turning down the thermostat and warm yourself by wearing a little more clothing on chilly days. Just a few degrees can make all the difference.

Unfortunately, many individuals do not realize the many benefits to using energy efficient light bulbs, as opposed to traditional ones. This is another great way to save yourself at least a little bit of money, as well. A typical energy efficient bulb can operate for a year or two, making them last much longer than traditional light bulbs. Depending on where you shop, you may be able to buy these lights for around five dollars per multi-pack.

Global warming is something that even renters can be proactive about fighting. For instance, if the windows need repair to keep air from getting in, talk to your landlord about repairing them. Ask your landlord about the hot water heater and adding an insulating blanket which can help to save the environment plus your landlord may also be able to save a little bit of money as well.

In Closing

You can easily accomplish the ability to be environmentally friendly with your transportation without making a major investment in an energy efficient vehicle. For many, we drive because we want to but don’t actually need to. Could you walk, join a carpool, or take public transportation instead? Leave the car at home at least three times a week, and you can do your part in fighting global warming.

Another simple step is to exchange the traditional light bulbs in your home for energy efficient ones. You can save yourself a little bit of money each year by switching all or at least most of the lights in your home to energy efficient light bulbs. These bulbs can last up to two years, which is longer than the traditional ones. It might take some price shopping efforts, but you can buy these energy saving bulbs for five dollars in a multi-pack.

The contributions to combating global warming are not constricted to homeowners, as renters can help to. If you feel cold air sneaking into your house when it shouldn’t, speak to your landlord about making window repairs. Though many people hesitate to bring items such as the hot water heater or insulating blanket up to their landlord, these tips can result in saving him or her money in the long run.

Summary

You may not have the financial means needed to purchase a new hybrid or energy efficient car; however, you will still want to take a close look at your methods of transportation. First, examine how often you drive and if those drives are really necessary. If not, consider walking, carpooling, or using public transportation. Leave the car at home at least three times a week, and you can do your part in fighting global warming.

Finding the Best Janitorial Service

by Wayne Pozdol

You may have never considered how complicated hiring a good janitorial service can be. However, if you have had a bad experience with a janitorial service, you already know that it is very possible to make a bad choice that makes a portion of your life miserable. There is a lot of diversity in janitorial services. One of the most obvious is the smaller hard-working company that really wants your business, or the larger company that promises to take care of you better.

Frankly, there are good and bad janitorial services in big and small firms. Larger firms must maintain a large pool of business replacing one they lose with another account. To accomplish this, they often have sales people or account managers. In some cases, you cleaning concerns seem less valuable to a company mostly interested in account acquisition. The smaller firm can deliver a quality of service like the larger firms, but is more vulnerable to economic issues. In the business, there is always new companies starting and other companies closing their doors. Therefore, one of the considerations is the kind of commitment the service gives to your building.

Large companies often have a sales force or account managers. This adds to the cost because larger companies have overhead to maintain the operation of a firm that may have 50-100 accounts. The challenge of the large firm is to stay in touch with the people on the job. One lost deal is not as dramatic to a big firm as it is to the smaller service because the sales force will replace that business. Large firms must look at the big picture in gross business which can leave the client feeling disconnected from issues that concern them.

Conversely, the small company struggles to provide a level of service compared to the bigger operations. They may not have the depth of manpower, training, and equipment that you will find in the large services. If the key people are ill or out of commission, the business is directly impacted. As you can see, it is often a trade off between pricing and support. The company that can span both issues will be the winner.

The classic way of choosing a janitorial service is to prepare an RFP (Request for Proposal) or collect a variety of quotes for the job. The RFP is a prepared report that details the job, expectations, and requirements so that everyone is bidding on a equal footing. Quotes generally ask the service to do the job using standard processes. Both methods collect final pricing to determine who will be considered for the contract. Unfortunately, this reduces the task to the “low bid” mentality that frankly sends the wrong signal to the competing firms. Most people aren’t looking for cut-rate service, but the best service for the money.

There is a need to raise the more valuable question to the top in any janitorial bid situation. Can or will the selected company do a good and reliable job for you at a reasonable price? Life has enough confusion already. Why hire a company that will add to your aggravation and leave you will disappointed expectations? I suggest that you read my report on “How to Hire a Janitorial Service” as a free download at www.GreenJanitor.net. I have prepared a ten page report that includes a sample RFP so that you can make a better choice of janitorial service this time.

There is another issue that must be including in any janitorial choice. States and cities are now pressuring area companies to “Go Green.” This start, quite frankly, with your janitorial service. In conjunction with your other considerations, you must insist on a janitorial service that does more than mouth service for Green services. In the report found at www.greenjanitor.net, I include an important section on how to determine if your janitorial service is really Green, or a Green pretender. Believe me, the pressure for companies to Go Green is going to be a huge issue, and your cleaning service is an important key to the solution.

Alternative Fuel Sources : Our Energy Of The Future

by Bruce Campbell

Alternative fuel is one thing that we should be focusing on if we’re going to be responsible stewards of the environment. Between pollution and diminishing supplies, petroleum and other conventional energy sources are becoming nonviable. If we’re going to leave this world in better shape than we found it, it’s time to start looking at alternative fuels. Here are a few of the options.

Conventional fuel sources are getting a lot harder to extract, and using them heavily over the past century means that there’s not as much oil as there once was. Now, people are getting a lot more worried about available fuel options. There’s concern that we’ll soon run out of petroleum, and a crisis will begin.

Fortunately, there are a number of other options that could be a viable solution. Science may be able to offer us a great commercial solution that will be readily available, friendly to the environment, and not too expensive.

For instance, bio-diesel, an alternative fuel extracted from plant material, can be used in a conventional diesel engine. A related fuel is E-85. Made from eighty-five percent ethanol and fifteen percent gasoline, it can significantly cut our reliance on traditional fuels.

However, neither of these fuels is a magic bullet. They still cause pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and require a lot of plant matter. The most popular choices are corn and soybeans, meaning that as production increases, these plants will become less available as food for humans. This has already caused problems in poorer locations.

One alternative fuel source that’s viable for transportation is electricity. It’s the best currently available technology when it comes to conserving our existing sources of fuel. The efficiency of these cars is greater even when it comes to using conventional means of generating electricity. That’s because all power can be generated in a central location, instead of in the car itself. Alternate energy sources like wind, water, and sun may be used supplementally or instead of coal and oil to generate electricity, depending on the location.

The ultimate alternate fuel source, of course is your own legs on bike peddles. Peddle power is becoming increasingly popular as none of the other alternate fuel sources has completely panned out. Bio-diesel is not widely available and the power that the electric cars allow has not been perfected as yet. The bike is really a flawless machine for short to medium commutes. You will be in better shape, save some money, and do the environment a favor as well. This article has presented the currently available alternative fuel sources and now it’s YOUR turn to decide.

Investing in Green Businesses

by Earth News Media

For many years, money that was used for good will was called charity and money used to make more money was called investing. Not anymore.

Nowadays, the two ideas are combining into a financial area called socially responsible investing. And both investors and mutual fund managers are figuring out that this new idea can be very rewarding, as well as do some good for the environment and society.

“Socially responsible investing means you don’t have to compromise your own personal beliefs to make money on Wall Street… whatever those beliefs are,” states Bob Guthrie, who is an investment broker with A.G. Edwards in Burlington, Vt.

The idea of selectively choosing stocks for social reasons dates back to the early 1900s, Guthrie said, when church members banded together and refused to invest in tobacco or alcohol companies. The trend continued with investors dodging corporations involved in the Vietnam War, he added, and most recently revolved around companies investing in South Africa.

But growth in this type of investing has mushroomed during the past few years as more and more investors have moved social consciousness into the mainstream of investing. And the impact is being felt.

Rob Kruger, vice president of portfolio management at Progressive Asset Management says that with help from stockholders, business practices concerning the environment are starting to change. He said while the issues may vary, companies are realizing they will suffer if they aren’t viewed as being socially and environmentally responsible.

“As this investing community continues to grow, a lot of proposals are being put forth by investors at annual shareholder meetings,” Kruger said. “A whole range of issues and activities is now being addressed.”

As part of its operational procedures, Progressive Asset Management conducts research for eco-friendly and socially responsible mutual funds. The firm filters out companies for environmental problems or nuclear involvement or whatever issues their clients are concerned about.

“As the clock ticks, companies are becoming more and more cooperative with us,” Kruger said. “A lot of them are now very anxious to talk about these social and environmental issues.”

Guthrie agrees that business practices are changing and says American companies are aware of shareholders who are concerned with the environment.

“Make sure your hard-earned capital is not invested in companies with little concern for the environment,” he advises. “Be sure to keep these things in mind when you invest and companies will too.”

Residential Solar Power Solutions

by Adrian Fletcher

It seems that fuel costs for the home rise above inflation each and every year. I’m not completely sure why this is the case. There have been many changes in the way utility companies are run in many countries. The biggest change is that many companies have become privatized. This means that they are responsible to their shareholders and their aim is to make a profit. This may explain why prices have been going up from a cynical perspective.

However the reason most often given for price rises is that the resources that create electricity are becoming scarce. Oil, natural gas and coal are finite resources and are becoming harder to find, harder to extract and harder to deliver to the consumer. Thus the consumer must cover the increased costs.

From this perspective, people are becoming more interested in alternatives to traditional generated power for the home. One alternative that has had a long and successful history of providing making with energy is solar power. This article will cover how to run a home on solar power using the latest innovations in the solar energy field.

You can run a house using the heat energy supplied by the Sun. The most typical application of thermal energy is to heat water. This can be used as hot water to use or heat the home. Solar thermal energy can also heat a swimming pool.

The principle behind this idea is that if you expose a flat metal plate to sunlight it will become hot. If the plate is painted black then more of the heat energy is absorbed. If you put insulation on the underside of the plate then less of the heat is lost back to the environment.

By passing colder water past the hot plate, the heat will be transferred to the water. This would create hot water. Depending on the heat of the hot plate, this water could be used directly in the home or it could be connected to the normal hot water boiler. The solar pre-heated water can then by heated to an adequate temperature for the home. The pre-heating should save on energy used by the normal hot water boiler.

Energy used to heat household water is one of the most expensive items on most utility bills. This could be reduced if a solar water heating system is installed.

Sunlight can also be used to create electricity. The technology that utilizes sunlight is known as photovoltaics (PV). A PV cell is made from a silicon based semi conductor. The PV cell reacts with sunlight to displace an electron. The flow of an electron from a negative to a positive terminal is the creation of electric current. By increasing the number of PV cells connected in series you can increase the voltage between the positive and negative terminals and the current of the electricity.

This is direct current (DC) which can be stored in batteries or converted to alternating current (AC). Using an power inverter. AC is used in homes to power lights, and most appliances that plug into wall electrical sockets.

Solar panels that you may have seen on a few roofs around your neighborhood are the practical application of photovoltaics. One panel is a group of PV cells aligned in a parallel or series configuration to increase the output of electricity. The efficiency of solar panels has improved over the years. The costs to create and install a solar panel have also reduced over the years.

Most people will start using solar panels as part of their existing grid supplied electricity. They are essentially joint venturing with the utility company. All the solar electricity that they create is sent to the utility company and this is deducted from their total bill at the end of the quarter.

The advantage of being connected to the grid is that if there is no Sun then you can use the grid electricity. There is less responsibility on the homeowner which can suit people new to solar power.

The next stage in solar electricity is to go completely off grid. This means you cut off the utility company and rely on solar power solely. This may be scary for some people new to solar power but it is possible but more work. You will need storage devices for your electricity and backup systems should the Sun not shine. Many people have fuel powered generators or have wind or water power systems as backup.
