Organic Gardening : Key Tips On Organic Vegetable Gardening

by Ray Lam

Organic vegetable gardening is gaining popularity these days. The main reason behind this is is people are more health conscious and are paying more attention to the food they consume. Also, in some places where food is not widely available, people have decided to plant their own vegtables. In this article you will find some useful advice on organic vegetable gardening.

Organic vegetable gardening does not use fertilizers and chemicals which can be harmful to humans. It also does not use genetic engineering or irradiation. Instead, it uses simple farming techniques like tilling the land, giving it enough water and sufficient exposure from the sun.

When the harvesting process is complted, a new kind of vegetable is planted which is better known as crop rotation to ensure the soil is always fertile. Growing organic vegetables is not limited to farmers. This can be done by homeowners since they have their own organic vegetable garden in their own backyard. The first thing that you have to do is choose what type of vegetables you want to grow. You also have to understand how big they can grow so it will be easy to plot how many can be placed in a row.

The second step is to determine the condition of the soil. You can purchase these kits from any hardware or garden store to check the soil fertility. Once you have determined that the soil is fertile enough you can start clearing it of weeds and rocks. After that, you should add some compost, bone meal or rock phosphate to the soil to supply it with nitrogen, potassium and other vital nutrients. If you need to adjust the soil’s pH level you can add some lime or sulphur.

When using organic matter, it is recommended that you till or dig in the fertilizers. Ensure that you have at least an inch of sharp sand if the soil you use is made of clay before you rake the soil into rows or beds. For best results, you should leave the soil for a month before planting.

Don’t forget to use organic mulch to blanket the garden. You can use ground bark for that since it will decompose over a season or two. You can also use a compost file made out of recycled leaves, grass clippings, coffee grounds, eggshells and kitchen waste since these serve as a good fertilizer.

The main threats to an organic vegetable garden are weeds and insects. To combat these threats, you can use other animals and insects to fight these pests. Once you have set an ideal condition, these insects will come to your home, hence you do not need to purchase them.

If you encounter a weed problem, you can easily get rid of them by pulling them out or spraying some home made vinegar as this prevents them from growing. If you plant thickly enough, you can discourage weeds from growing in between your plants.

Planting your own organic vegetable garden isn’t that bad given that the only ones who will be consuming what is planted are those that live in the household. But it’s going to be a bed of roses from the time you till the land to the time that they will be harvested.

The History of the Bonsai Tree

by Tyler Flemming

From its origins as a Chinese artistry form over 2,000 years ago, the bonsai tree remains an object of enchantment that embraces both nature and artistic production. Now, anyone can take part in the wonderful custom of bonsai cultivation with the assistance of the internet. Everything you’ll need to know about bonsai trees can be found online; where to buy, how to begin, growth and feeding, maintenance techniques, and the mandatory tools and equipment. Growing bonsai trees is the perfect relaxation method for enthusiasts at any level.

Over many years, Japan and China began to incorporate aspects of their unique cultures together and the bonsai tree was one of the many things that were merged into the highly cultured country of Japan. Initially, only Buddhist monks engaged in this artistic production form, yet eventually, the aristocracy took up the bonsai fine art and it became a status symbol for a long time. After this time and for many, many years afterward, the artistic production of bonsai lay solely within the Japanese culture. As years passed and Japan began to open up its doors to other countries, bonsai fine art became highly sought after in North America for its peace of mind and beauty.

You’ve surely seen the beautiful Bonsai tree someplace in your life, even if only watching Mr. Miagi in the Karate Kid. It’s probably likely that if there’s a Japanese restaurant in your city or neighborhood, then you’ve seen them there. The artistry and commitment that it takes to plant and do the necessary maintenance with a Bonsai Tree is enormous, and sometimes much as well daunting for those with a green thumb. Bonsais are dwarf-potted plants that have been cultivated for centuries by the Chinese and Japanese. Since the end of World War II, this artistic production has become a great hobby and pastime in the United States. It not only takes patience to properly grow a bonsai, but also a good amount of artistic accomplishment as well. It’s time-consuming, and there is a lot more to it than one might think.

Contrary to popular opinion, bonsai trees aren’t genetically modified. They’re regular trees or shrubs that are unnaturally stunted by pruning their roots and tying their branches with wire. The artistry originated in China, and was adapted by the Japanese early in the second millennium. Miniaturization is accomplished through strict regulation of a bonsai trees growing conditions. Scaffold branches are chosen early on as the only branches to be allowed to prosper, while the extra branches are mercilessly pruned off. Bonsai trees are intentionally allowed to become root-bound in their containers, and the roots, also, are pruned. But root-bound plants won’t thrive forever in that condition and bonsai trees must be re-potted every two or three years to supply the roots with clean soil.

A bonsai, consequently, is a living artistic production form that continually changes throughout the life of the tree. It is a combination of both horticultural and artistic skills and you may well have these skills without realizing it. Practice as much as possible and you will before long have your own collection of miniature trees that will improve over the years and leave you with hours of joy.

by james i Greene

Roses are very beautiful flowers loved by many people across the world, the rose has always been a symbol of love and affection. With the sweet smell and the beautiful flowers these plants produce it is quite impossible not to have some type of rose plant in your garden.

PHC is a strategy of keeping roses stress free by different factors allowing the growth and maintenece of the plant. The results of PHC is that rose bushes in a healthy condition are less likely to get infested by insects and diseases than other plants under stress.

When you first start to plant your roses make sure that you plant the crown of the rose at least 3 centimetres below the crown. Fill in with and around with soil and the tamp it down taking care not to break the root ball. For the first twenty days the roses must be watered regulary, this will allow your new rose bush to grow healthy.

Benefits of all your hard work can be wonderful looking and sweet smelling roses, which in turn can be cut and put into a vase in your home. When pruning or cutting your roses you must take careful attention not to damage the stems if the rose is in bloom.Try not to prune the first season roses to much, when the rose matures you will be able to prune them more frequently.

When deciding how many rose bushes you want in your garden spread them out away from each other, this will help the plant to find it’s own space and grow properly.Best time to plant new rose bushes is in early spring when all the frosts have gone. When transplanting last season’s rose bushes make sure you cut all dead leaves and tidy up the bush, this will help new growth.

I have a few climbers and when all the frosts have gone i prune the old stems down as this helps new stronger shoots to form. Sometimes i will find a little fungal disease and i’ll spray the plant while dormant. Most gardeners will use fertilizer on rose plants normally thoughtout the months until September.

Mid-Spring: Watch for rose slugs and either handpick, spray with a superfine horticultural oil, or use a systemic insecticide. Fertilize roses again after the first flush of flowers. Watch for shoots coming from the rootstock below the graft and remove. After the soil warms, apply a generous layer of organic mulch.

Living in a cold climate that has harsh winters can cause roses to die if not properly protected from the cold. When the ground freezes just mould earth around the base of the plant and then add evergreen boughs. Small climbing roses can be detatched from their supports put on the gound then covered with earth this will protect them from very cold winters.

Plants Perfect Accent to any Room

by Keith Markensen

The natural benefits of plants in an office or home are many. They provide a great decorative touch to those lonely stretches of unpopulated floor, table or desk space, they improve the air quality of the room, and have a naturally uplifting presence that calms and soothes those who look upon them.

These are but a few of the reasons why every home and office space should be outfitted with any number of plants. Yet before you go turning your home into a leafy, jungle paradise that oozes atmosphere you should observe the following pointers and tips on some of the plant varieties you may feel inclined to add to your abode.

Firstly, as beautiful and innocent as most plants appear, many have an unknown danger lurking in the tips of its leafy tendrils that can potentially be very dangerous or even deadly to both animals and children. Some plants when consumed or even touched can cause severe illness. One of most popular poisonous plants is ivy, with philodendron another popular choice that is potentially harmful.

Any household that includes children and/or pets either living there or visiting even infrequently needs to have its plant life chosen with care. Researching beforehand the potential dangers a plant may hold, the symptoms they are likely to cause upon consumption, and the quickest and most effective remedy should that occur are all vital. Maintaining constant supervision over children and pets in areas where these plants exist is important, though ensuring they’re out of reach is even more so.

Kids are ingenious though, and if that pretty plant catches their eye, you can be sure they’ll devise a clever way to reach it and take a closer look, so don’t let your guard down even when you feel a plant is out of their reach.

Aside from the potential dangers of plants, when choosing any plant for your home it’s important to identify which area of the house that plant will reside, and the amount of sunlight it is likely to receive there. Hiding a plant that requires plenty of sunlight in a dark corner will ensure it does develop well, though you can remedy this by moving it into a sunny spot for at least a few hours each day. Putting your indoor plants outdoors for a few hours on nice days is a great way for them to get sunlight and air.

Another factor that can influence plant growth is the temperature of the room or area it’s located in. Some plants thrive in warmer climates, while others may require cooler temperatures. Most need a nice moderate environment though, so if you stick it in a cool basement, or a stifling room in the summer, they may not grow as desired.

As a general rule of house plant care flowering plants will require more sunlight to feed their growth than other types of plants. Tropical plants will do better in an environment with moist air, while cacti will thrive in the areas with dry air, those resilient plants should be able to survive even in conditions not ideally suited to them.

Tips for Buying a Log Cabin for your Garden

by Spencer Wilkins

The cost of log cabins varies greatly depending on the kinds of logs which have been used and the size of the property. You will find that those cabins that have been built using handcrafted logs will cost much more than those where the logs have been milled.

Therefore, before you actually go ahead and get a cabin built from logs it is crucial that you actually know what the difference is between milled and handcrafted logs. Those that have been milled will have been placed through a sawmill, lathe or planer. This will ensure that they all come out in the same uniform size, shape and have the same profile.

Also, logs, which have been milled for a cabin, will have been air or kiln, dried to remove any excess moisture before construction begins. This will ensure that sufficient amounts of moisture have been removed and prevent the possibility of the building shrinking too much once the wood dries out further.

As for the surface of these logs, they are generally smooth and flat and could even have been coped as well. Also in a large number of cases, they will have tongue and groove joints along the sides where they are to join. This not only makes the construction process easier but helps to provide a much stronger and stable outer shell to the cabin. But if you want, the outer side of the log can remain rough to provide a much more rustic look to your cabin.

The most favoured types of woods, which are commonly used to produce milled logs for cabins, are pine, cedar, spruce or fir. The least expensive type of log cabin using the milled process are ones that are made from pine or spruce whilst those from cedar tend to be the most expensive.

Above we have explained something about what milled logs are, now we will provide you with some information regarding handcrafted ones. These will be prepared using either a drawknife so the wood will be hand peeled or they will be water peeled. In most cases, the wood will still be green, as the trees from the which the logs are being produced have only been cut for a few days or a week. Where as milled logs can be either air or kiln dried, with handcrafted ones the only way is to extract moisture is through air-drying. There are unfortunately not enough kilns around which are large enough to accommodate these logs.

The types of trees that are most favoured for handcrafted log cabins are the Douglas fir, Pine and Spruce. However, there are some log cabin companies who prefer to use woods such as Oak, Juniper, Cyprus and Alpine Fir (also known as True Firs).

As mentioned the cost you pay for buying and having log cabins constructed will not only depend on the way in which the logs have been prepared. You also need to take into consideration the size of the cabin you are having built. The bigger the cabin then the more labour intensive and the more logs will be needed in order to build it. If you want to save money but would like a large cabin then you are better off going for milled rather than handcrafted logs.

Tips for looking after your Garden Furniture

by Spencer Wilkins

Yes having teak garden furniture in your garden can really improve the look and the way in which you would use it. However, if you do intend to keep this type of furniture outside through out the year in order for it to last you need to learn how it should be cared for.

Teak is a hardwood and this is what makes the furniture so it is very durable. Plus this type of furniture will last quite a considerable amount of time because it is a very dense timber and contains high levels of resinous oil within it. It is this oil which actually not only makes the wood resistant to drying out but also from absorbing too much moisture.

Today you can either purchase teak garden furniture in its raw state or when it has been oiled. Furniture, which is still in its raw state when it arrives, will have a golden color to it. However, as time passes and if the wood is left, untreated it will fade to a silver grey color instead.

Certainly if you are after the silver grey look then once the wood has reached this stage there is very little that you will need to do to make sure that it retains this color. However, if you would prefer your wood to retain the golden color of when it arrived you need to start applying teak oil to its surface.

For furniture, which will be outside in the garden throughout the year, you will need to apply the teak oil every 6 months. However, before you actually apply the oil you will need to clean the furniture first.

To do this you take some warm water (with a mild detergent mixed into it) and then use a soft damp cloth to wipe off and remove any dust or grit. After you have done this, you now need to leave the wood to dry naturally before you actually apply the oil.

Once the furniture is completely dry, you can start applying the oil. You can either do this by wiping it over the surface with a clean lint free cloth or by use of a spray gun. Using a cloth is much better as this allows you to spread the oil evenly over the surface of the wood. Once you have covered all the wood with the oil you need to leave it try until it is tacky to touch.

Once it is at this stage you should then dry with another clean lint free cloth and this will remove any excess oil on the surface of the wood. The final thing that one needs to do when oiling teak garden furniture is to buff or polish the surface with another clean rug an hour later.

What Does a White Rose Mean

by Elizabeth Crosthon

Roses are gorgeous flowers, captivating and are always in style. Roses come in a variety of colors, each color signifying a different thought. Giving a rose to someone is a great way to articulate your deepest emotions.

White is the traditional symbol of marriage, innocence, truth and virtue. White also signifies peace and tranquility. White roses are traditionally the preferred flowers for weddings. They are especially valued for their simple beauty and pure color. White roses carry so many meanings they can be confusing to the reciever, but they are usually given as an expression of deep emotions.

White roses signify deep, clear emotions. They are given without reservation or ambivalence. The red rose signifies lust or passion, but the white rose goes much deeper to suggest an infinite love that goes to the very core of one’s being. It carries an almost spiritual significance. White roses symbolize devotion, kindness, and deep friendship in love.

Bouquets consisting mostly of white roses are often carried by the bride in many weddings today, often symbolizing the virginity or innocence of the bride. This tradition and significance of white roses is said to have begun in 1840 during the wedding of Queen Victoria.

Also, these flowers can symbolize the traditional Victorian attributes of women: modesty and purity. A white rose bud, though, can symbolize those virtues in a unique way. It can stand for a girl who isn’t old enough to experience romantic love. This kind of girl isn’t a teenager yet, and is viewed as innocent and untainted. Like the white rose bud, she is sweet, graceful, and pure.

The white rose, or fascinating blue one, also signifies discretion. This color rose is an excellent way to show the recipient that they are delightful to be around, and are a dear friend. The color of a rose is important, and one should learn the meaning behind each color to understand the intricate meaning that may be conveyed.

These roses symbolize many virtuous qualities and traits we all highly treasure and wish we possess ourselves: loyalty, unity, honor, honesty, holiness, and truth. Roses are also the color of spirituality, making them peerless wedding adornments and flower of choice. Weddings represent love, loyalty, unity, new beginnings and spirituality, all great, awesome, qualities shared by our roses.
