Birthday Cake Decorating Instructions

by Isis K. Nouvelle

The original cakes produced in America were actually small loaves of sweet bread. Imagine the huge difference they are from the modern day recipes we have today. This should make any homemaker delighted, as they are now able to choose from a wide variety of cakes to bake. You need knowledge to produce great cakes. The logical thing to do is to purchase a good set of tools to assist in your cake making adventure.

Every little cake creation starts with the foundation, so you need to begin with a real nice coating of smooth icing, enough to cover the surface of this cake. It is a good idea to start your cake decorating with a thin layer of frost, enough to cover all crumbs from ever getting into the regular layer of your icing. When you are done with this layer, leave them in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. This will set the first layer and lock in all crumbs from ever rising to the external layer of your icing. Now you can have fun decorating you cake without having to worry about those dreaded crumbs suddenly appearing.

You can apply the next layer using an icing spatula to make the job so much easier. Start at the sides by smoothing the icing nicely using the icing spatula. Dip the spatial in cold water before you use them, it makes the job easier. To smooth the top, dip the spatula in cold water and holding it horizontally over the top of the cake. Start at the farthest point and drag the spatula towards you.

Keeping it Simple

Smoothing the icing is no easy job; in fact some claims that it is actually the hardest part of all. There is no substitute for practice. Rejoice if you can do it right, it is the hardest part.

If icing is not your cup of tea, use dusted sugar powder. You can choose to use a stencil for a more decorated appearance, or just the powdered sugar for a clean look. Try using one of those cakes decorating stuff or a change. The use of colorful candies, nuts and coconut slices can make your cake stand out from the crows.

The use of cardboard combs can make your icing looks textured. You can make a piping by using a pastry bag and a metal tip held together with a coupler. This is the fun part-you may create flowers, shells, cones, in fact anything you can think of! Fill your bag with one cup of icing and start decorating your cake. Use your other hand to guide the tip. Take the opportunity to learn the right piping technique.

Fondant, a smooth white paste, is used in complicated cake decorating. They are kneaded and roiled to be placed over the cake for that expensive, classy look. They are often used to create elegant 3-D designs.

Create A Perfect Hostess Snack In No Time Flat

by Belinda Jillie

When you’re planning and hosting a party, figuring out what to serve can be a dilemma. Whether it’s an all-out dinner or not, snack foods of some kind are usually expected.

It’s essential to plan out a range of hostess snack foods to serve in advance, so you’ll have an organized list to choose from every time you host a get together. Go ahead, try out some of these and make note of your favorites.

Keep this master list with your other recipes and you’ll always know where to find it when you’re at a loss for what to serve.

Hot Artichoke Spinach Dip: This stuff disappears fast at parties! It’s best complemented by pieces of French bread, tortilla chips, crackers, or even veggies such as carrot sticks. Note: Although some variations of this recipe recommend nuts, it’s safest to avoid nuts. You never know who has nut allergies.

- 2 jars of artichoke hearts (marinated), chopped and drained - 2 cups of mozzarella cheese, shredded (low-fat works OK, but avoid nonfat since it won’t melt as good) - 1 cup of parmesan cheese, grated - 1 clove of garlic (minced) - 1 cup of mayonnaise

Preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Mix up all the listed ingredients in an oven-safe dish (decorative baking dish will do fine). Bake for 45 minutes or until the dip is hot and bubbling. Warn your guests, it’s hot!

Sandwich Loaf: Although this hostess snack goes back to the seventies, this is one main dish that never fails to impress people at luncheon gatherings.

-1 large loaf of good white bread -3 sandwich fillings of your choice - popular choices include ham salad, egg salad, etc., but you can also used thinly sliced deli meats and other items like this. -1/4 cup margarine, softened -2 packages cream cheese, softened -1/2 cup half and half

Trim the crusts from the loaf of bread, so they’re rectangular in shape. Cut it horizontally into four large slices.

Butter one side of a slice of bread, then lay it face-up on the serving plate. Add the sandwich filling, spreading evenly.

Continue adding layers of buttered bread and sandwich fillings. Now you mix together the half and half and the cream cheese to make a frosting. Thickly frost the loaf.

Add garnishes of parsley, then slice vertically to create individual servings.

Enjoy your gathering, and good luck with the perfect hostess snack!

3 Ways To Start Cooking Light

by Greg Spence

Cooking light is all about healthier cooking. Cooking light need not mean bland and tasteless food. It can simply mean taking an existing favorite recipe and substituting some ingredients for their lighter alternatives.

Thankfully, many staples are now easily available in low fat versions. From reduced fat Oreo cookies and cheddar cheese to milk and bread, you really do have many cooking light choices in several food groups. You can make your kids’ favorite mac n cheese and use skim milk instead of whole Vitamin D milk and use vegetable spread which has no trans fat as opposed to regular butter and you have already saved you and your family a lot of calories.

Lowering your calorie intake is important for a healthier life therefore you should concentrate on low fat dressings in sandwiches, for example, and tinned foods in water rather than oil. Fat free ranch is good for dips and low fat mayonnaise is a better alternative for sandwiches.

Bread can be a very unhealthy food, especially if you eat a lot of it. Go for a 100% whole grain bread because it is high in fiber and low in fat. Choose whole grain also when buying muffins, rolls and other foods such as pasta and rice. Whole grain foods help to protect against some diseases and can make you feel less lethargic. A great start to cooking light.

Switch the oil you use when you begin to cook light. Even if olive oil is more expensive, try using a little of it and use no-fat cooking spray instead. If you must use more oil and olive oil is burning a hole in your pocket, try canola instead. It is very price competitive and has lots of health benefits as opposed to corn or vegetable oils.

When baking use a low calorie sweetener in place of sugar. Line your baking tins with a no fat cooking spray and use dark chocolate instead of milk. All of these are good alternatives for cooking light.

Make Your Own Flavorful Salsa at Home - It’s Easy!

by Tony Bueler

Some homemade salsas have been a favorite for years and even generations. Families have been handing down their own special family recipes to successive generations and kept a long tradition of making their own salsa.

It’s very convenient to drive to your nearby grocer and purchase a jar of salsa off the shelf, but making your own at home can be quite rewarding! If you have had a productive garden this year and have an overstock of peppers and tomatoes, salsa is the perfect way to go!

When you do this once, you may find that stocking up your pantry with homemade salsa will be a regular goal of yours! You only need a basic supply to make salsa, a simple recipe and the process of making the salsa.

Typical salsa ingredients are variations of the following: tomatoes, green pepper, Jalapeno, red chili pepper, garlic salt or powder, onion, cilantro, lemon juice. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

And salsa is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins. These are necessary for a healthy body and what better way to make sure you get your fill of them?

Be sure to tweak the ingredients to your taste - Adding more jalapenos and other peppers will make your salsa hotter and spicier salsa. Alternatively, for a milder salsa, add more tomatoes and reduce the number.

It is important to realize that the full strength and flavor of spices will deteriorate with time. Therefore make sure to use fresh spices. Also, always use fresh oils as well. Like spices, oils will lose their flavor over time and if kept too long can even go rancid.

To avoid chili pepper irritation wear rubber gloves or even small plastic bags over your hands. Don’t touch your face or rub your eyes while handling hot peppers.

You will need all the supplies that you typically need when you are preserving tomatoes. You will need canning jars, lids and bands, a hot water bath canner, a large pot to cook the salsa, strainer, jar lifter, large bowl, and the ingredients from your recipe. Thoroughly wash all the utensils you will be using and boil the jars and bands. Warm the lids but don’t boil them. Leave the jars and the lids in the hot water up until the time you are ready to fill them.

You can also store them in your freezer. After making a large batch simply divide it into small containers and freeze them. You’ll be able to enjoy fresh-tasting salsa year round!

The Secrets of Cooking Fish

by KC Kudra

There are many ways to cook fish, each producing unique and delicious results. Different cooking methods suit different fish and it also depends whether you are using a whole fish, fillets, or steaks. Stuffing adds texture and flavor. There is more space in the body cavity of round fish. Do not overstuff the fish because most stuffing contains breadcrumbs, which swell when they are cooked. Parsley and walnut pesto, for example, is delicious with sea bass. You can also roll or sandwich fillets with stuffing and oven-bake them.

Different Ways of Fish Cooking

Steaming is a good, easy way to cook fillets, whole fish, and steaks. You need to put the fish in the steamer over boiling water and have a tight-fitting lid on it. Poaching is another healthy way of cooking it, in which you add seasoning, cream or another thickener and herbs. This gives you a sauce to serve with the fish.

Oven baking and roasting are suitable for whole fish or fillets. You place the fish in an ovenproof dish and add herbs, seasoning, oil or butter and white wine. If you want very tender flesh, you can cook your fish “en papillote”, which means you put the fish in sealed paper or foil, so it will cook in its own steam. You might like to add lemon or limejuice, fresh herbs and white wine to the fish before sealing the parcel and cooking it. If you would like to braise your fish, you need to put it on top of sauted vegetables in an ovenproof dish, add some white wine and bouillon, and cook for about 20 minutes, with a tight-fitting lid in place.

If you have a grill, you can use it to cook fillets or small, whole fish. If you want to use whole fish, slash the skin on each side a couple of times and brush the fish with olive oil or melted butter. Turn the fish halfway through the cooking time and baste it to keep it moist and add flavor. You can also wrap the fish in a foil packet and add herbs, lemon juice, and olive oil before grilling it.

You do not always need to heat fish in order to cook it. Ceviche is when you soak white fish, usually snapper, in chili, herbs, and lime juice. You can also use flounder, sole, or scallops. The acidic citrus juice cooks the fish.

Wood Fish Board for Cooking

Most types of wood are suitable for cooking fish, as long as the board is pest-free and untreated. You need to soak the wood before using it. Soak the wood for at least an hour, until it is totally waterlogged. This ensures it is going to give off enough steam to cook the fish.

Cedar is a common wood for fish boards but you can also use alder, maple, cherry, apple, or oak. A wood fish board is for one use only and you can get one from a specialty food store or online.

Brushing your fish with oil stops it from sticking to the board. When you cook on a wood fish board, you do not flip the fish because it cooks indirectly. Once your fish is prepared, oiled on one side and seasoned, you need to place the fish board and fish directly on the grill. You can baste the fish during cooking but do not use anything flammable. The board should be over a low fire so as not to ignite.

Cooking fish on a wood fish board gives plenty of flavors, since the smoldering wood gives a smoky taste. In addition, you will not need to clean the grill afterwards!

Online Cooking References

by Aazdak Alisimo

You can often learn what you need to know by using technology that’s been around for years - such as magazines, books and TV. But sometimes, it would be a bit easier to use newer technology, such as the Internet, to get the job done more efficiently. Such is the case in learning how to cook.

Books are a good way to learn a lot about cooking - they can contain a lot of recipes in a small amount of space, as well as information about ingredients, how to store and care for specific kitchen equipment and more. But most cookbooks are not illustrated, and leave much to the imagination.

For pictures, we can always turn to TV. TV shows about cooking often show just how to pull together a recipe, and how to use certain types of kitchen equipment as well. But you can’t print a recipe on TV, and TV can’t give you the detailed amounts needed to really complete a recipe like a book can.

Websites are the best of both worlds. They are the Internet’s solution to both television and books, as you can display both text and videos on websites. The video files can be lengthy or short, and they can be high quality - showing just as much as a television show right on a website.

Websites can also display tons of text - in fact, the basis of most websites is still text. This means that the same detailed instructions and recipes found in a cookbook can be displayed right alongside the videos of cooking. This makes the whole process more convenient than showing the two separately.

Online cooking sites are also searchable, making them perfect for cooks who know what sort of recipe they want - they can just search the site for the name of the recipe without having to flip through several cookbooks looking for a specific page. This is particularly useful with obscure recipes.

Beginning cooks can also be excited about cooking websites. There are many different webpages that are written just for them. These pages can include such helpful tools as step by step guides to cooking that are both written in text and filmed for video, making them very useful.

You have many different choices when learning how to cook, and online resources should definitely be a part of your learning to cook experience, no matter how else you learn your cooking skills. Combining online sites with classes or books will make sure you learn to cook well.
