How to Think Up Unique Fundraising Ideas

by Terry Terhune

If you are looking to come up with unique fundraising ideas for your group, you’ll need to think about a few things first. Think about what resources you or your group has which can make putting on a fundraiser easy. Also, consider what sort of fundraiser will best appeal to your community. Finally, consider what talents and skills your group has which will lend themselves to a successful fundraiser.

The resources which you have at hand are the first thing which you should think about when seeking unique fundraising ideas. Think about what locations you can use to hold your fundraiser, what items you may have to sell and so on. If you think you have no resources at all, you are probably just not thinking hard enough about this. Many fundraising ideas require little or no resources to begin with.

The skills of willing volunteers must also be taken into account. Anyone who will benefit from your fundraiser is likely to be willing to volunteer for your event. If you know people with skills; baking for instance, than a bake sale may be a good fundraiser for you. If you have some creative types in your group, then perhaps a craft sale will work well as a fundraiser for you. If there are parents, consider having children create artwork and crafts for the fundraiser. Knowing your group and their talent can help you to come up with some excellent, unique fundraising ideas.

The community in which you live must also be taken into account. What sort of fundraiser will really draw people in to your fundraising event? Think about the issues your community cares about and work around this to create a fundraiser with broad appeal for your community.

You should also hold an event where you know people have money to spend. If you hold an event on the poorest side of town where the economy is very poor then your chances of making money are much lower than if you were on the rich side of town.

There are local businesses and private organizations which are likely to be willing to help in some capacity with your fundraising efforts. For instance, if you are raising money for your book club or local library, why not reach out to your area book stores? They may be willing to donate books for a fundraising book sale. Whatever your organization, look for businesses in your area who have interests similar to your own and ask them if they would be willing to assist in your fundraising.

Grocery stores are also a good bet - again, they generally carry books as well and also will often be willing to allow you to place a table somewhere on their property to hold a bale sale. Any public place which will allow you to hold an event and has a good amount of foot traffic will work well for your fundraiser.

To come up with unique fundraising ideas, think about all of these things. Knowing the skills of your group, the resources available and the nature of your community will help you to come up with an event which will work well for your group.
