Selecting Quality Leather Wallets

by Craig Walenta

You’ve probably noticed the overall lack of quality in the leather wallets offered by designer brands like Polo, Coach, Kenneth Cole, etc. Its amazing that these once venerable brands continue to produce cheaply made wallets at OEM factories that simply stamp their logos on the wallets. In turn, they retail the wallets for $100 which wound up costing them no more than a dollar!

Nevertheless, if you are looking for the best leather wallets we suggest that you look for the following.

1. The stitching. Look for close, tight stiching. Specifically, measure the number of stiches per inch in any of the leather wallets that you are looking at. Why? The greater the space between the stiching, the cheaper it is to produce, and the more likely the wallet will wear out because of the constant rubbing in your pocket. 2. The leather. You should be looking for a full-grain leather that will weather well with age. Often times, the greater the age of the wallet, the more charachter the wallet will take on. Cheaper wallets will simply lose their dye and begin to fall apart in sometimes as little as a year depending on the overall humidity it is exposed to. 3. The functionality. You have to make sure that the wallet will meet your needs. Overall, cheaply made wallets tend to have ‘loose’ credit card slots that don’t hold your credit cards tightly. Quality wallets are taut. It may not sound like much, but when credit cards are stacked double into a cheaply made wallet and then are removed such that now only ONE credit card is placed in the same slot, you may have noticed that there is a tendency for that credit card to slip out of the leather wallet. 4. The interior lining. See how durable the interior lining is. Many cheaply made wallets are lined in thin polyester that will tear. 5. Country of Origin. Simply put, Italian, Argentine, US and Turkish made wallets are currently the best wallets you can currently purchase.
