RNs Are In Demand - Is It Your Dream Job?

by Connie Warenstein

Most people realize from hearing the news or reading the paper that RNs are in demand. Did you also know what they represent, in the health care industry, the biggest vocation? You may think of an RN as someone who gives you shots in your doctors office or who records you symptoms at the hospital, but they can do many other things as well.

Advancement to supervisor is common for many RNs during their career. This path is not for everyone though as many people do not enjoy managing others and those types of registered nurses are usually happier working directly with patients.

A significant number of registered nurses work at hospitals in one of several different departments. Many people may think of the emergency room or the maternity ward but there are many other specialized departments such as pediatrics.

Retirement homes and communities also need nurses on staff. These fields as well as all nurses fields are growing as the population ages. In addition to patient care in these fields there are also opportunities in management roles.

After someone leaves the hospital from surgery they may need to have a home health nurse visit their house to assist them. These types of nurses may work independently assisting many types of patients.

Other places registered nurses work include the government and private organizations. These entities may hire nurses for public health work. Other nurses may work for companies in certain industries at the place of employment to provide emergency assistance and to give exams to employees.

What type of job requirements do nursing supervisors hold? Of course managing the nursing staff is one of their responsibilities but they may also be responsible for ordering new supplies and making sure the medical equipment is maintained.

Advanced nursing careers are also available such as a certified registered nurse anesthetists or a certified nurse midwife.

Filipino Maids: Philippines’ Pride

by Alice Sy

There are Filipino maids in practically every country in the world. This comes as no surprise because they are considerably paid higher wages abroad than in the Philippines.

Statue Square, Hong Kong is only one of a thousand places scattered across the globe where the smiles and cheers of Filipino helpers can be seen. It is indeed marvelous to know that domestic helpers from our country are so valued in foreign lands. At times, many have been thinking why Filipino helpers are so treasured in other countries.

Their exodus abroad may also be linked to their growing popularity, especially in terms of being hard working, dedicated and loyal. Among their other traits well-liked and desired of by their foreign employers are their being hospitable and honest.

Foremost, Filipinos are highlighted by their loyalty and dedication to their employees. Since they are thousands of miles away from their families, they have no one to channel their emotions and longing for their children. That is why Filipino helprs are so endeared to their employers that they treat them as their family. In return, their boss also reciprocates them and treats them also as part of their family. So, don’t wonder if your balikbayan relative gets home quiet emotional or carrying photo albums with pictures of her employee. Yes, they value family much and to a Filipino, her employees are also her family.

Only a maid from the Philippines can dedicate long hours of work without the slightest hint of a scowl on her face. She can get up as early as dawn to begin her responsibilities and retire very late at night. She can do all these things every day without objection. They are rather an easy lot to deal with so many foreign employers prefer to hire them to other maids.

One advantage that Filipino servants abroad possess is her fluency in English, thanks to the American colonizers. Compared to Mexicans, Chinese and other nationalities, Filipinos have deeper vocabulary in English and can comprehend better with their employers.

In some countries, to have a Filipino servant is a status symbol. In England, the aristocracy, celebrities, and millionaires hire Filipino helpers to their household. Filipino helpers are also among the higher paid servants since they impress their boss with their quality service. Filipino helpers in Italy are also prized for their good work. They even tell their employers how much salary they want to receive. In Greece, a household is considered middle class if it hires Albanian servants; while a household with a Filipino servant is hailed as rich.

But there is more to the name Filipino than being just called a servant. What makes Filipino maids endear to the heart of the world is not actually the physical looks. More than the hard work and dedication, a Filipino works with a full heart, a simple ingredient that no employer has ever found in other nationalities.

Domestic Helpers from the Philippines: A New Breed of Superheroes

by Alice Sy

No less than the President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, brands domestic helpers from the Philippines as supermaids, a term, they, indeed, so richly deserve. These domestic helpers have, for years, endured the loneliness and pain of being far away from home in order to be able to give their families a better life. Because of this, they have been well appreciated and admired by people all over the world.

It is common to middle class families anywhere to hire from a maid - either those who live-in or from one who lives out. However, here in the Philippines, maids suffer from low wage and extreme work compared to domestic helpers in other countries. A beginner is lucky enough to get $20 a month as salary while a long time servant makes between $30 and $40 and free food and lodging. It is indeed due to financial need and poverty that forces more homemakers to venture in foreign lands. This exodus also includes numerous professional who choose to work abroad than suffer poverty in the country. But simply speak the name of a Filipina and what will follow is an utterance of praises from their employers.

Considering the high cost of almost everything, a domestic helper will never survive with such a low salary. For this reason, they are seeking opportunities outside the Philippines, even if it means leaving the great loves of their life.

But what pushes a Filipina from leaving her country and working abroad? To think of leaving your country and serve strangers in other countries is martyrdom. To abandon your family and not seeing your children grow is very sad. But they have an option. Most domestic helpers from the Philippines are sole breadwinners of their families. And to stay working abroad ensures their family of stability, at least in financial terms.

One thing that gives a Filipina the edge against other nationalities is the quality work that no one else could parallel. They never do second rate work that is why they are among the highest paid servants abroad. They are also treasured by their employees.

Indeed, to have a Filipina in a foreign household is a pride to an employee. In England, royalties, elites, and rich businessmen have Filipina servants. So as in Italy and France. In Greece, a family is considered well-to-do if they have a maid coming from the Philippines.

Another reason why Filipinas are preferred is their ability to communicate well in English. They are also fast learners with the language their employers speak. Unlike the Chinese, Mexicans, and Indians, they speak more fluent and understand their employer’s instruction better because they know their language.

These Filipina domestic helpers are wanted, too, and desired of in France and Italy. In Greece, it is almost an indication of wealth to be able to hire a Filipina maid.

You can’t submit application forms when you’re applying as an electrician. Sure, they’re easy but they’re hardly enough to make you qualified. Resums are the keybecause they truly provide a list of your qualifications in relation to the job you’re applying for.

Your resum must be very brief, concise and easy to read. It is not a wise decision to fill your resum with impertinent information, which could only serve to confuse your employer. It should be that the first time an employer reads it, he or she finds out the basic information that prove that you’re qualified for the job.

The following are needed in an electrician’s resum:

* Your contact information (Full name, address, telephone number, mobile number, email address). * Your qualifications and educational background. * Employment objective or goal. * Work experience, if any. * Special skills and abilities

References should not be included in the resum but should instead be included in another sheet of paper. If your employer asks for references, don’t hesitate to give them what they need. A reference is a person who can attest to the truth supplied in the resum.

How to Choose the Best Resume Styles

by Carlee Evie

There are many resume styles typically used by job seekers today and choosing the right one is essential if you want to stand a chance of making a favorable impression in the current highly competitive job market.

You may be wondering why there even has to be so many styles. Well, for starters, resumes aren’t just presented as physical documents any more. There’s a growing trend for people to view documents like resumes on the computer. A style that works splendidly as a printed document just will not work as well when sent through email or fax. So, this has naturally led to more styles for each medium.

The particular position that you are applying for may also require a very specific resume style, and you should be prepared to adapt your present resume to best display your skills according to the situation at hand. This after all is what the main purpose of a resume is: to show off your capabilities.

By far, the most widespread form of resume writing is the chronological style, which as the name implies lists all of the positions that you have worked in starting with the most current.

A newer resume style-the functional style-has been increasingly more popular recently. This method involves listing your most significant accomplishments first, with lesser accomplishments following. This will allow any would-be employer to quickly skim through your qualifications and determine if you are right for the job. At the same time, this form also allows you to play up your strengths.

You’ll find a few other resume styles as well, but most of them are just variations of the chronological and functional resumes. By the way, don’t shy away from experimenting with different combinations of resume styles to suit your needs. The whole idea behind the resume is to communicate your abilities in the clearest way possible, and choosing the best resume style gives you the freedom to do that.

Construction Sales Job

by Fen Tan

The rise of global urbanization has paved the way for the rapid growth of several industries. Industries like infrastructure, housing and construction have been enjoying significant profits due to this trend. One of the industries that surprised everyone with its sudden boom in the market is construction sales. Since structure-based industries all work hand-in-hand, the demand for construction equipment has skyrocketed.

Construction services are still the preferred method of construction but the construction sales industry is slowly catching up. The demand for construction materials has dramatically increased ever since the turn of the twentieth century.

Apparently, the push for urbanization has increased the sales of tools and tractors. Even the government is a willing customer given its numerous infrastructure projects.

Aside from selling construction equipment, construction sales agents will also promote the construction services of a company. There are still a lot of institutions, including the government, that prefer to hire professionals to do all the construction work for them.

Apart from selling construction materials, supplies and equipments, some construction sales jobs also offer construction services. They provide the laborers, machines as well as the equipment, which are packaged for a certain price.

It is not too hard to become a construction sales representative. All you need is a convincing sales talk with a dash of spunk and respectfulness. Usually, a good mix of those aforementioned characteristics is enough for a representative to seal several deals. Of course, you will have to walk the extra-mile with your pitch if you want to qualify for “employee of the month” honors.

Update on California Employment Law

by Colin R Cherry

This year saw the hourly rate of California workers rise to $8.00, a rise of over 13% thanks to the recently enacted statutes of California employment law. Because of this California now has the highest hourly rate in the USA.

In addition, workers under California employment law provisions will also receive an increase in meal and lodging credits by the same percentage as the minimum wage increases. Be aware though, that under employers governed by California employment law, they can use the increased amounts for meals and lodging to count against minimum wage when they provide workers with meals/lodging.

Unfortunately, if you are a federal employee and work outside California, your wage remains at $5.15/hour. That bites!

The hottest issue in California employment law is the payment of overtime. This is an area of California employment law that is pretty much akin to stepping on a land mine. Why? Because there are two classes of workers under California employment law - exempt and non-exempt - and failure to know the difference can cost business big bucks.

If an employee entitled to overtime is treated as exempt, they could be eligible to a nice chunk of change for overtime pay once the dust settles.

Is there a difference when paying an exempt versus non-exempt worker? Under California employment law, a non-exempt worker is subject to all pay rules set up by the Industrial Welfare Commission - that includes overtime. In other words, a non-exempt employee must be paid all overtime hours worked.

Check the California employment law codes to see which category you come under or call your local Department of Labor.

Basically, the category under which an employee falls is based upon their level of responsibility or their professional status. Whether they are receive a wage or salary, or their job title does not have anything to do with it.

Licensed professionals such as architects, doctors, lawyers, certified public accountants and engineers tend to be classed as exempt as are those in middle management who have the appropriate responsibilities. The responsibilities would include the ability to hire and fire, train employees and who spend less than 50 percent of their time performing the same duties as their employees.

The other two categories considered to be exempt are outside sales reps and those who create/formulate business policies for their organizations. Again, if you have any questions about exempt versus non-exempt employees and how to make sure they are paid according to the law, check with the nearest Department of Labor office. Save yourself some time and grief in the long run.
