So You Bought a New Puppy… Now What?

by Tony Bueler

Congratulations are in order - this will be an exciting time for you and your family - especially the kids. The smiles on your children’s faces when they see their brand new puppy will be hard to beat. Just think of the hours of enjoyment they will bring to each other!

But those few couple of months can be a challenging. There will be some training issues that you will need to deal with. These will be no problem, but the earlier you can train your little puppy, the more you will be able to enjoy him/her later on.

For example, those little puppy teeth can be sharp! When puppies play together, they naturally and uninhibitedly bite and mouth each other. This is not a big problem for them since their skin is relatively thick and it causes them no discomfort whatsoever.

But when you are training them to socialize with humans, this is not the kind of behavior that is acceptable. And although this kind of biting is cute when the dog is just a few pounds, it ceases to be cute when they are 25 pounds or more. Controlling this ‘biting reflex’ is an important first step in training the little puppy.

Have the puppy socialize with other puppies if at all possible. Puppies will bite each other as they roll and play. But this also happens to be the best way to train the puppy out of their biting habit - especially if they are playing with already socialized pups. The group will mildly punish the puppy that becomes to aggressive while playing and teach them to suppress their biting habit.

The socialization they get with other dogs also teaches the puppy not to be fearful of other dogs and it helps them drain off their excess energy. Puppies that do not get the opportunity to socialize with other dogs also tend to be more hyperactive as they develop fearful and aggressive habits. A dog will tend to react aggressively in a new and unfamiliar environment if they had never been socialized.

A puppy should also be socialized with adults in order to become a member of the household and neighborhood. Introduce your puppy to both children and adults and help them to make the distinction between those who are their owners and between other people.

The best time to train your puppy to be socialized is when they are 3 months old or younger- this is when they catch on very fast. This is even more important when dealing with breeds that are typically less passive.

The best way of training your puppy not to bite is to get them to trust you. Never strike your puppy as this will not help them to trust or respect you, It will simply cause them to distrust you - which is not what you want. The confused little puppy won’t really grasp why you did this and it will be counterproductive to their training.

Most of all, enjoy your puppy, he/she will bring endless enjoyment to you and your family.

Cost Effective Security Measures for Your Home and Business

by Tony Bueler

Those people who have had their homes broken into will tell you that it is more than just the loss of their money and possessions. It is also the loss of confidence and comfort in knowing that you are not safe, even in your own home.

How can you secure your home from theft and vandalism? Studies show that the best way for you to protect your home from theft is to make thieves think you have a security system in place. About 25% of homes in the US have a security system. The deterrence provided by that system is invaluable. Houses with a home monitoring system are broken into at a significantly lower rate than unmonitored ones.

The fact of the matter is that it is not the actual security system that provides the protection, but rather the belief by the thief that the home is monitored. Professional thieves will be able to enter a home regardless of whether the home is protected or not. The deterrence is provided by making your home appear to be more difficult to enter. Thieves will then bypass your home and look for an easier mark.

One drawback is that a home security system can be very expensive. There is the installation charge, equipment charge and the monthly service charge. The overall cost of a home monitoring system can run well over a thousand dollars.

There are also other disadvantages with a live home monitoring system. These include false alarms which are not only an inconvenience for the home owner, but can also incur charges from the local police departments for responding to false alarms. Clearly, there are both advantages and disadvantages to a home monitoring system.

So, how can you get the benefits of home security monitoring system without the high cost of such a system?

The latest concept in enhanced home security provides the answer. ‘Dummy’ security systems create the impression of a monitored, secure home or business without the high cost. A home owner can purchase several fake security cameras and install them at strategic and visible home access points. Many of these cameras have a flashing light that gives the impression of a live camera. Some others move back and forth to enhance the illusion. These cameras are simple to install.

And these fake cameras are low maintenance and only require batteries. A home owner can increase the effectiveness of the cameras by adding fake security decals on the windows or even a small security monitoring sign in the lawn. Keep in mind that it is not that you have a security system that provides the deterrence, it is the fact that the criminal believes that you have such a system that makes it so effective.

Make Your Own Flavorful Salsa at Home - It’s Easy!

by Tony Bueler

Some homemade salsas have been a favorite for years and even generations. Families have been handing down their own special family recipes to successive generations and kept a long tradition of making their own salsa.

It’s very convenient to drive to your nearby grocer and purchase a jar of salsa off the shelf, but making your own at home can be quite rewarding! If you have had a productive garden this year and have an overstock of peppers and tomatoes, salsa is the perfect way to go!

When you do this once, you may find that stocking up your pantry with homemade salsa will be a regular goal of yours! You only need a basic supply to make salsa, a simple recipe and the process of making the salsa.

Typical salsa ingredients are variations of the following: tomatoes, green pepper, Jalapeno, red chili pepper, garlic salt or powder, onion, cilantro, lemon juice. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

And salsa is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins. These are necessary for a healthy body and what better way to make sure you get your fill of them?

Be sure to tweak the ingredients to your taste - Adding more jalapenos and other peppers will make your salsa hotter and spicier salsa. Alternatively, for a milder salsa, add more tomatoes and reduce the number.

It is important to realize that the full strength and flavor of spices will deteriorate with time. Therefore make sure to use fresh spices. Also, always use fresh oils as well. Like spices, oils will lose their flavor over time and if kept too long can even go rancid.

To avoid chili pepper irritation wear rubber gloves or even small plastic bags over your hands. Don’t touch your face or rub your eyes while handling hot peppers.

You will need all the supplies that you typically need when you are preserving tomatoes. You will need canning jars, lids and bands, a hot water bath canner, a large pot to cook the salsa, strainer, jar lifter, large bowl, and the ingredients from your recipe. Thoroughly wash all the utensils you will be using and boil the jars and bands. Warm the lids but don’t boil them. Leave the jars and the lids in the hot water up until the time you are ready to fill them.

You can also store them in your freezer. After making a large batch simply divide it into small containers and freeze them. You’ll be able to enjoy fresh-tasting salsa year round!
