Chromatography Helps Us Wrap Up Real World Mysteries

by Fabian Toulouse

Solving mysteries has always intrigued human beings. We love mystery novels and crime dramas because we want to uncover who the culprit is. In real life, advances in science also deal with unraveling a mystery. Instead of private investigators, processes like chromatography typically solve real-world mysteries.

Chromatography is a technique that helps scientists, law enforcement, and even schools and companies verify the composition of a particular sample. Basically, scientists need a way to separate organic from inorganic compounds. The word itself means ?color writing? and the method was developed in the initial part of the twentieth century. But since the 1950?s, chromatography has rapidly developed as an important tool for the tricky job of analyzing materials and samples of unknown mixtures.

Although many different laboratory techniques fall under the general heading of chromatography, they all share the common procedure of separating mixtures. A solvent carries the mixture to be studied through some kind of stationary material. As the mixture passes through the material, the analyte-the substance that needs to be identified-is separated and can be identified.

There are several different types of chromatography that have a wide range of uses. Liquid Chromatography can be used to check water for pollution levels, while Gas Chromatography is used to test materials as varied as fibers or determine the presence of bombs at an airport. Thin-layer Chromatography provides a quick way to determine if foods contain insecticides or pesticides. Although these examples are all quite a bit different, the process is the same. A mixture is broken down, and by other chemicals and processes, unknown elements in the mixture are identified.

Chromatography is a great tool that we have developed to answer crucial questions involving health and public safety. Through the use of controlled chemical interactions and reactions, chromatography helps us get to the bottom of things.

by Fabian Toulouse

Most people think that photography did not come about until the mid-1800s, and in a sense, they are right, but many discoveries that made today’s photography possible came far earlier. The first camera invented, in fact, was a pinhole camera made by Ibn al Haytham (965-1040). The important discovery of silver nitrate by Albertus Magnus came in the 13th century, followed later by silver chloride. In 1694, the photochemical effect of light on chemicals was earliest described by Wilhelm Homberg.

All of these contributions led to the development of photography in the 19th century. In 1826, the very first enduring photograph was taken by Nicephore Niepce. Just in time for soldiers going off to the American Civil War, commercial photography was in its infancy. All the young men going off to fight wanted to leave behind a little tintype or ambrotype for his family or special girl. Though there are only few action photographs from the war, the Civil War has the sad distinction of being our first military action with a photographic record.

As photography advanced, more careers opened up, and it also became a hobby for thousands of curious folks worldwide. Newspapers needed photographers, magazines were inaugurated to showcase photography, photographers were always wanted for family portraits. In the 21st century there are any number of careers for photographers, from crime scene investigation work to news to work in NASA or other scientific arenas. Photographers circle the globe capturing every facet of human culture as well as animal and plant life. They witness natural beauty at which the rest of us can only sit home and marvel.

Anyone with an interest, however, can take up photography for themselves, today. With distance education courses, studying is fun and interesting. The coursework can teach you all aspects of the field, whether you use a digital or 35 mm camera.

You do not even have to be thinking about a career, you can simply pick courses that will help you take great pictures of your kids or photograph the spider webs that cover your garden in the morning light. Whatever your interest, photography is a useful thing to learn.

The pressure on today’s youngsters to succeed in school is phenomenal. Not only is the pressure on youngsters, but it is on teachers and administrators as well. Sometimes, the in-school environment can suffer from tension and pressure that makes the learning experience painful. Gone are the days of long recesses on inviting days and long lunch hours with time to chat with friends. Kids are moved speedily from one activity or subject to another, trying to shovel into the students’ heads enough information to see them through the vital year end tests.

For some children, the pressure manifests itself in stress-related illness and bad school performance. For those students, it may be time to let the games begin! Educational software for kids makes learning engaging instead of a like a cattle drive. Learning games can help a child who is left behind by the quicker pace of his classmates catch up.

Children who are bored with a certain class, like math or reading, can find it a lot more fun when it is offered to them in the form of a game. Kids who detest doing homework and refuse to put in the time necessary to memorize such basics as the multiplication tables or addition facts may have to be cajoled away from math games teaching the same skills.

Teachers and parents alike can profit from educational software. Using video games is a smart way to capitalize on something today’s children naturally love. The game format is familiar; they are passionate about the challenge of trying to beat level after level. And with educational games, the more levels they win, the more they learn! There are games for several of the courses for which they are responsible in school, as well as games that zero in on a particular areas of interest a child might have.

Getting an education should not be painful to a child. In fact, a lifelong love of learning is one of the most important gifts you could ever give your child. Foster that curiosity and watch your child blossom.

Could You Have High Blood Pressure?

by Fabian Toulouse

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one disease where your bad habits can really make you sorry. Except in cases where aging or genetics are the cause, people with high blood pressure usually have no one to blame but themselves. For ages, doctors have been preaching about leading a healthier lifestyle, yet Americans, including children, grow unrelentingly fatter every year. Obese, of course, is the PC term for it, but call it what you will, it is claiming Americans by the millions.

We have been warned-repeatedly. There are so many bad behaviors underlying high blood pressure, yet Americans seem unwillingly to give them up until disaster strikes. We love our cigarettes, caffeine, alcohol, salty snacks, and fast food. We would much rather sit on our sofas, pop potato chips and candy, and watch other people sweat on Biggest Loser. We run here and there, work way too many hours at stressful jobs, and struggle to keep things clicking at home. Then we have the temerity to be surprised when our hearts give out.

As there are no symptoms to high blood pressure, it has earned the sinister name “the silent killer.” It is in every person’s best interest to have regular blood pressure checks. High blood pressure can be regulated if you are aware you have it. For some, drastic lifestyle changes in the areas mentioned above can lower blood pressure. Regular aerobic exercise, for example, is a dependable way to lower your heart rate and extend your life. Many people may fail to achieve results without medication or some kind of supplements. One thing is certain, this is not something you want to ignore.

With one in three Americans living with high blood pressure, one third of them unaware, it pays to be safe. Do not wait until you are hospitalized for a heart attack to learn you suffer from this killer. It is horrifying to know you have high blood pressure, but it is scarier NOT to be diagnosed. In this day of modern technology, you need not be a statistic.

Neuropathy Affects Millions of People

by Fabian Toulouse

Neuropathy is a mysterious disease. The Neuropathy Association calls it the most prevalent disease most people have never heard of. In fact, more than 20 million Americans suffer from some form of neuropathy. Neuropathy results from damage to peripheral nerves, often from diabetes. Symptoms may include pain, numbness, tingling, and poor balance. It shows up in the hands, arms, feet, and legs. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better it can be treated.

In neuropathy, three types of nerves can be affected. The sensory nerves, obviously, monitor sensation. Autonomic nerves control the function of internal organs. Motor nerves affect the muscles. As the nervous system is the communication network within your body, neuropathy might best be understood as a disruption of communications.

Most neuropathy patients are aged, and the care for their disease costs Medicare $3.5 billion yearly. Many people experience subtle sensations that come and go. For others, the disease may be debilitating. There are over one hundred types of neuropathy, including autonomic, cancer-related, compressive, hereditary, and diabetic. Few of these can be cured, but for those which cannot be, there are many ways of controlling the symptoms and reducing pain.

If you suffer from neuropathy, the best thing you can do for yourself is to become an energetic advocate for your own health. Do your own information search. Learn as much as you can about your symptoms and the various treatments that are out there. Be very honest with your doctor about the frequency of your symptoms. Insist that he be up front with you about your disease and what you can expect as it progresses. Also, make sure your physician has a file with your full medical history and is updated with every single medication and supplement you are taking. Be proactive: ask your doctor if there is anything you should be doing to help yourself. Finally, you may benefit from talking to others who suffer from neuropathy. Find out if there are any support groups nearby.

There is no substitute for educating yourself. Knowing more about neuropathy gives you a degree of control you may not otherwise have, and knowledge has a way of empowering you.

Boat Parts Need Occasional Replacement Just Like Car Parts

by Fabian Toulouse

Boating can be a real delight, but for responsible boat owners, it is not all fun and games. You cannot just purchase a boat, toss it in the water, and visit it on weekends with no thought to maintaining it. Like any engine, a sterndrive or inboard or outboard engine needs certain care to stay in running order.

While the sterndrive has many good qualities, it does have the unfortunate disadvantage of having multiple parts beneath the waterline, among them hoses, rubber bellows, oil lines, and, of course, the propeller. Obviously, it is harder to examine and maintain at top working condition elements which are beneath the water surface. It is important to give these parts proper attention, however, as corrosion can cause problems. Just as a car has certain parts which will need regular replacement, like brakes and windshield wipers, certain boat parts need occasional replacement.

A major part that needs to be monitored is the transom, which, through the drive shaft, powers the engine. The transom can take only so much stress and strain without incurring damage, even when a boat is well maintained and driven only under normal conditions. A troubled transom could cause collateral damage to the engine or even sink the boat. Therefore, regular inspection of the transom is imperative!

At the beginning and end of each boating season there are certain items which should be tended to. Particularly before winter, the oil should be changed, spark plugs inspected, and the impeller, which performs the important task of cooling the engine, should be checked. It should be frequently inspected during the season as well.

Your boat will reward you with reliable performance if given the regular care it requires. Boat ownership is a tremendous responsibility, but the rewards are even greater. The joys of boating-fishing, water skiing, cruising, or just being out in nature taking in the sparkling glint of sun on water-are worth the job of careful boat maintenance.
