Hiring The Right Singapore Maid

by Dave Keel

Moved to Southeast Asia and looking for a Singapore maid? It’s difficult to find good help and hire people to deal with all your household needs. The person one hires should be trusted and be a hard working person. What are the steps to finding the right maid for your house?

Agencies

First thing you may want to do is research on maid agencies in Singapore. They can be found in many places around Singapore and the information they give might be of great help. Agencies can provide you with resumes of many people looking to be hired as a Singapore maid. There are also some online agencies that you can check out, namely NetMaid (http://www.netmaid.com.sg) and MaidLibrary (http://maidlibrary.com.sg). Websites like these can make the task a while lot easier.

Why Choose Agencies?

If you are looking for an employee you can trust and one who is hard-working, you will have to go to a maid agency. These agencies make the task of finding a maid much easier. Most of the resumes of people looking for such jobs are passed on to agencies in Singapore. This is good for them as it protects their rights and it also protects the rights of employers.

Preferences

Once you have found an agency that can help you find people available for employment, you will need to submit some paperwork. Within the documents, if it doesn’t indicate for you to do so, you may want to add some notes on what you are looking for in a maid. This will be a great help for the agencies to pinpoint the available people who match your preferences. It can include anything from age range to educational background. The more specific you are with your preferences, the better choices you will have.

Knowing Where They Are From

Singapore does not hire out just about anybody from around the world and you can’t pick any nationality. However, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) does have a list of approved Foreign Domestic Workers from a few countries. These countries include Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh. Learning a little about these countries will give you an idea about the kind of employees you will hire. This is also helpful so that you understand the people you are hiring in terms of culture and personality.

Be Responsible

Another thing to keep in mind when hiring a Singapore maid is you should know your responsibilities as an employer. This is pretty much basic with any country where you will hire someone to be a part of your employ. For example, in Singapore the law states that the employer is responsible for all medical expenses of the maid. This means that as an employer, you must be responsible for the full cost of your maids’ medical care which also includes the use of hospital facilities.

Security

Also known as a Security Bond, Singapore agencies will expect that you pay a deposit of $5000 to cover costs of repatriating a maid. Remember that a Singapore maid will most likely be from another of the countries that were mentioned previously. This deposit is made with the Work Permit Department or at MOM. Keep in mind that failing to repatriating a maid after the end of her work permit will mean that you lose that security deposit.

It may seem difficult o have to go through so much to hire a Singapore maid. These processes, however, are standard practice when hiring a maid through an agency but it is worth it since you will most likely find the most competent of employees.
