It never fails to amaze me how the large canvas paintings end up on the walls in the art gallery. I wonder how long it takes for someone to actually finish a painting so huge. The first and most important thing that you should have before you start painting is that; you need to have a canvas. A canvas can be bought from an art shop or even a large bookstore. There are may canvases available but as beginners, suggest that you stick to cotton canvases. However, do look out for cotton canvases that are quite thick. This is important as thin cotton canvases may not be able to support the ‘weight’ of the many layers of paint. You should also get an easel.

The most essential item is the canvas. As we all know there are many types of canvases available in the market. If you are wondering which one to choose, well, calm down. This article is here to help. As beginners, you should start painting on cotton canvases. This is because; it does not take a lot of experience to control the flow of the paint on a cotton canvas. However, you must remember that you should choose a cotton canvas that is considered quite thick.

The next thing on the list is your brushes and paint. It is advisable for beginners to use acrylic paint rather than oil based paints as they are easier to dry and less complicated to use. You should use a thin brush for small areas and a thicker brush for bigger areas. It is always better to find a good quality brush as you do not want to waste money buying brushes over and over again. A brush that can be considered good quality is a brush made from a horse’s tail. However, you may fin it difficult to find it and it may be quite costly too.

One more thing that you should not forget: Turpentine or thinner. Your first masterpiece will definitely create a substantial amount of mess and there will be paint on the floor and maybe even on your hands.

The last thing you should get is a bottle of turpentine or thinner. Let’s face it. It is you first time painting and it would not be very clean. It’ll be a mess! A bottle of turpentine or thinner will help you get rid of the hard to remove stains easily.
